We are done, The Old Man and the Sea is finally over. I am not sure if I am glad or not. Overall, I really liked the book. It was a little bit hard to follow at times, but I liked the plot. I’m not sure what REALLY drew me to the book.. but I just enjoyed reading it, well, having it read to me.
Like I said, there were parts that were a bit confusing. I still have a couple of questions, well, maybe not questions, but thoughts wandering through my mind. Why did the fish end up getting eaten? Obviously that is how the author wanted the book to be written, but why? I also would like to know what the old man does after he gets home, sleeps, etc. Where does he go in life? Does he keep fishing, or did he get so discouraged that made him decide that this was this his last trip? How did his relationship with the boy change, or did it? I think that it probably made them grow closer, because it was just one more thing that the boy would look up to the old man for, but who knows.
In a sense, I kind of feel that the old man catching the fish but not returning home with anything but a skeleton, served as a sort of symbol. I think that when the people saw the skeleton, and measured it, in a sense it was what the old man needed to regain his respect from his fellow fishermen.
Well said. You ask some intriguing questions, ones I too would like to have answered.
